My Other HIP – Dr Dermot O’Flynn

On June 26, 2024, Dr. Dermot O’Flynn delivered an insightful talk at ZEN Hampstead, focusing on the distinction between healthspan and lifespan, and how individuals can optimise their health as they age. He highlighted the growing gap between lifespan and healthspan, where people are living longer but spending more years in poor health. For instance, data from England between 2018-2020 showed that men and women spent significant portions of their lives, 20% and 23% respectively, in poor health, despite increasing life expectancies.

Dr. O’Flynn also introduced attendees to his own initiative, The Wellionaires Club, a platform dedicated to promoting a lifestyle that emphasises not just longevity, but also quality of life through various health practices and community support. This club aims to create a community of individuals committed to enhancing their healthspan by adopting evidence-based wellness strategies.

During the talk, Dr. O’Flynn shared some of his personal techniques for maintaining good health, which include using Kaatsu bands for blood flow restriction training, riding a bike regularly, and focusing on grip strength training—a key indicator of overall health and longevity. These activities are integral to his approach to staying fit and healthy, reflecting his belief in the importance of both physical and mental wellness.

In addition to these practices, Dr. O’Flynn emphasised the importance of proactive measures like the Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD) to enhance healthspan. He provided guidelines on how to practise FMD safely, particularly for those over 40, as a strategy to mitigate age-related diseases such as Type 2 diabetes and dementia. He also stressed the critical role of sleep hygiene in maintaining good health, offering practical tips like creating a dark, cool environment, and using supplements like magnesium and melatonin to improve sleep quality.

Overall, the talk underscored the need for a holistic approach to aging, where the focus shifts from merely living longer to living healthier for longer, supported by both personal wellness practices and community engagement through initiatives like The Wellionaires Club.
