Intralipid infusions are a prescription-only intravenous therapy that may be offered as adjunct immune support for women having IVF, or with a history of recurrent miscarriage or implantation failure. Every treatment at ZEN Healthcare starts with a clinician-led consultation and is subject to medical suitability.
When implantation fails repeatedly, or miscarriages occur despite good-quality embryos, an over-active immune response, particularly raised natural killer (NK) cell activity, may be one of the factors involved. Intralipid® is an intravenous fat emulsion that is designed to help moderate these immune pathways, with the aim of supporting a more favourable environment for an embryo to implant.
When infused slowly, Intralipid is thought to temporarily modulate cytokines and NK-cell cytotoxicity, without suppressing the wider immune system. The aim is to support a more favourable environment for embryo implantation.
Intralipid is an adjunct therapy: it is given alongside your fertility treatment plan, not instead of it, and only where immune factors are thought to be relevant.
Some studies and evidence reviews have reported higher ongoing-pregnancy and live-birth rates in selected women with recurrent implantation failure (RIF) or recurrent miscarriage when Intralipid was added to IVF cycles.
Whether Intralipid is appropriate for you depends on your history and test results, which your clinician reviews with you at your consultation.
Intralipid is not a treatment or cure for infertility, and no therapy can guarantee pregnancy. Evidence for its use in fertility care is limited and mixed, and research is ongoing. Treatment is prescription-only, subject to medical suitability following consultation, and results vary between individuals.
Intralipid may be considered for women with the following histories, following a full clinician-led assessment.
| Typical indication | Example scenario |
|---|---|
| Recurrent miscarriage | 3 or more consecutive miscarriages with immunological findings |
| Repeated implantation failure | 2 or more good-quality embryo transfers without pregnancy |
| Elevated NK-cell activity or Th1:Th2 ratio | Confirmed on blood or endometrial testing |
| Autoimmune conditions | For example, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or lupus, in conjunction with fertility treatment |
Intralipid is administered on prescription, so each stage of your treatment is planned and monitored by qualified clinicians.
A baseline consultation and blood tests rule out contraindications such as soya or egg allergy, or lipid metabolism disorders.
Typically given 7 to 10 days before embryo transfer. The dose and infusion time are set by the prescribing clinician.
May be repeated at 6 to 8 weeks’ gestation if NK-cell activity remains raised.
Nurse observations during each infusion, and a follow-up call around 24 hours later.
